Notes: | Trấn Quốc temple is 1400 years old and the oldest temple in Hà Nội. It commemorates a time of heroic struggles to drive out the Chinese and establish Vietnam as an independent nation. Early field marshals and kings were so venerated that they became saints, or thánh, in popular belief. By contrast, Hồ Xuân Hương’s time was marked by fratricidal clan wars, corruption, and religious hypocrisy. |
